Rules of the game

Reversi, including its variant known as Othello, is a two player game played on an 8 x 8 game board. The players are identified by color, DARK and LIGHT, and take alternating turns placing a disk on the game board - subject to specific placement rules. The DARK player always moves first.

In Reversi, the game board starts empty. The first two moves made by each player must be made in the four central squares of the board - no captures are possible. In the Othello variant, the central four squares are pre-filled with 2 of each player's colors placed on a diagonal.

Play continues with each player placing a disk to "capture" one or more of the opposing pieces. Each player must place their piece next to an opponent piece so that there is a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) of one or more opponent pieces ending in that player's piece. More than one line may be so established with the placement. All of the opponent pieces on those lines are "captured" and converted to the placing player's color.

In Reversi, if a player cannot place a piece so as to effect a capture then the game ends. In Othello, if a player cannot place a piece they simply skip their turn - it is only when both players cannot move that the game ends.

At the end of the game, the player with the most pieces is the winner.
